When we think of modern urban life, we often take for granted the hidden systems that support it: clean water, efficient waste disposal, and sprawling infrastructure. Yet beneath the city lies a complex story not just of engineering achievement, but of evolving ways of thinking about humanity and our place in the natural world. The sewer, by contrast, is systemic, expansive, and invisible—a perfect metaphor for the Modern desire to control and sanitize the environment while distancing ourselves from the unpleasant byproducts of our own existence.
Sewerage as a Mirror of Modernity
The sewer system, then, isn’t just a technical achievement. It’s a symbol of modern epistemic commitments: the belief in rational planning, the separation of humans from nature, and the idea that problems can be solved by making them disappear—often by sending them “away.” In many cities, including Halifax, this meant piping sewage directly into harbors and oceans, with little thought given to long-term environmental consequences.
This practice wasn’t rooted in scientific confidence that nature could absorb our waste.
