Welcome to my blog, where I dive into my doctoral research in environmental studies. This work explores the long and complicated history of pollution—and the eventual cleanup—of Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia.
The title, Going Down the Drain: Techno-Political Narratives and the Remediation of Pollution in Halifax Harbour, is inspired by my dissertation, though the research took on many forms over the years. This blog is my way of sharing that work in a more accessible and engaging way.
So, what can you expect? The blog will take three main approaches:

- Theoretical discussions, drawing from my comprehensive research process and dissertation.
- Case studies that illustrate how technological path dependence and policy networks shape ecological change
Throughout this journey, I decided to move away from a heavily theoretical approach—particularly one focused on Michel Foucault’s ideas of episteme and human relationships with nature. While intriguing, this perspective made my dissertation feel too abstract and, as an environmental studies researcher, I wanted to stay grounded in the ecological realities at play.
By breaking down the intersections of technology, politics, and environmental change, I hope to offer a fresh perspective on how Halifax Harbour’s story reflects broader global challenges. I look forward to sharing this work with you!
